Agoda is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to join its IT Engineering team in Bangkok, Thailand, with relocation provided. The role owns the design, scalability, reliability, and performance of a critical backend service or domain end-to-end, combining hands-on coding with system design and technical leadership. Responsibilities include leading complex feature development, making independent architectural trade-offs, mentoring engineers, partnering with product and business stakeholders, and driving production issue resolution.
The position requires 8–12 years of backend engineering experience, deep expertise in Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go, and strong skills in distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, and performance/scalability. Candidates should demonstrate ownership beyond assigned tasks, comfort with ambiguity, and a track record of mentoring engineers with measurable outcomes.
Design, build, and own scalable distributed systems and microservices within your domain
Lead development of complex features and technical initiatives end-to-end
Drive system design, API design, and engineering best practices for your team
Own scalability, performance, reliability, and fault tolerance of services
Mentor engineers on your team and handle production issues, RCA, and follow-through improvements
8–12 years of backend engineering experience
Strong experience building and owning distributed systems at scale
Expertise in Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go
Strong understanding of microservices architecture, REST APIs, system design, SQL/NoSQL databases, performance, scalability, and concurrency
Demonstrated impact mentoring engineers with concrete outcomes
Experience building large-scale consumer or marketplace platforms
Exposure to event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
Experience with NoSQL databases (Cassandra, MongoDB, Aerospike)
Familiarity with cloud (AWS/GCP) and CI/CD pipelines
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
